Character Name: Hythlodaeus
Age: Physically in his late 20s/early 30s, otherwise he's well over 15000 years old
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: Post-6.0
CRAU: N/A
History: Wiki
Personality: Described as "incurably smug" by his best friend Emet-Selch, Hythlodaeus revels in gently teasing his friends and associates. He's easily amused, often seen chuckling. He relishes the chance to make a new acquaintance; open and friendly, he's always amenable to good discussion. He seems quite comfortable with strangers, ready to tease as long as they seem comfortable with it (or not, in Emet-Selch's case). Despite this he's polite and rarely purposefully rude, though some of what he says may come off as carelessly insulting at times.
He's also quite curious. Inquisitive and intelligent by nature, he will happily explain a topic of interest for someone else's benefit, as he enjoys helping people and discussing different theories. He's humble despite his antics, having rejected the seat of Emet-Selch when it was offered to him, instead recommending his friend in his stead because he felt he was more qualified. That humble side can almost come off as Hythlodaeus underestimating himself, though. He claims he can't transform, or even do much of anything besides see souls well. Though he tells the Warrior on the moon that they should believe in themselves, he doesn't quite do the same for himself. He puts on airs that he's comfortable this way, but he does have self-esteem issues- when left to limit break, for example, he seems somewhat unhappy that it's been left down to him and unsure if it will work.
Hythlodaeus has a bit of a manipulative streak. He'll sweet-talk his way into getting what he wants where he can, though he never does so with the intent to harm anyone. Mostly, it's his various whims that he acts upon and ropes his friends into- much to their exasperation. After all, the man has a penchant for mischief, and could be described as terribly irresponsible. But ultimately, Hythlodaeus is a loyal and devoted man when he becomes someone's friend. He speaks fondly of the people he loves, declaring that his mission in life is not to fulfil some greater purpose for himself but to help his friends achieve their dreams- at which point, he will happily return to the star with them, having accomplished what he set out to do. He truly believes that this is his purpose. He's always ready to lend a helping hand to a friend in need, no matter what. When Azem resolves to stop the eruption of a volcano using Ifrita, a fire spirit, Hythlodaeus quite readily grants his friend access to the concept despite its restricted status.
When the Final Days descend upon Amaurot, he offers himself up as one of the sacrifices to Zodiark, so that his friends may see the end of their people's suffering. And when he meets the Warrior of Light on the moon afterwards, he trusts them because he sees the soul of his dear friend Azem in them, despite not knowing what the Warrior intends to do with the imprisoned Zodiark or the star itself. He doesn't pass judgement hastily, or where he doesn't feel it's his place to- recognising that he is but a shade in Emet-Selch's recreation of Amaurot, he chooses not to judge the Warrior for their battle with his fellow Amaurotine, Elidibus, saying only that his personal desire would be for them to live. Ever the optimist, where the other shades on the moon went mad upon awakening from their slumber, he retained his sanity.
After being called upon by the Warrior for one last time in Ultima Thule, Hythlodaeus seems to show a flair for the dramatics- perhaps not as strongly as Emet-Selch, but he shows an appreciation for it nonetheless. In fact he rather enjoys life for what it is- whether it be in the beauty of his surroundings, or his admiration for his friends. He claims to enjoy having the ability to see souls simply "for its own sake", and though he can and will put his gift to practical use he rather prefers to do things differently when he can. He's a gentle soul, wishing creations slain in Ktisis Hyperboreia a peaceful return to the aetherial sea despite having to put them down, but the idea of death doesn't sadden him as such. He claims that it is "always beautiful" when one returns to the star, though he's under the impression that by doing so one has fulfilled their life's goals, and doesn't think twice about repurposing creations for other things.
Abilities:
• Soul sight: Hythlodaeus' most powerful ability is his soul sight, which allows him to see the soul colour and brightness/density of others, follow their aetheric trails (aether being the building blocks of life, and the essence of others) and pinpoint people across long distances by the colour of their soul alone. The brighter the soul, the generally "stronger" the person; however this can be interpreted in many ways, including strong willpower, physical or magical strength, etcetera.
Ancients in general also tended to recognise one another by their aetherial signature rather than by sight alone- this meant that despite wearing the same masks and robes in most cases, they could immediately recognise one another anyway. This isn't quite the same as soul sight, however, as one likely needed to be close enough to the other in order to discern who they were, whereas Hythlodaeus' soul sight allows him to find someone over a great distance. I have a permissions post here!
For Neon Requiem souls specifically: the soul will be visible on the shadow as a colourful glow in the centre. This means that the edges are still not visibly showing the shadow's true form unless I have player permission.
• Creation Magicks: Using aether, Hythlodaeus can weave clothing, tools, and even animals and plants into existence. However, he isn't very good at this in comparison to his Ancient friends- he can create on a small scale, but anything too large or complex and he will have trouble with it. Unfortunately concepts that go wrong can be somewhat dangerous! He also prefers to just make someone else do it if they're capable of it. Likely won't need to be nerfed since Hythlodaeus can't create much on an average day anyway, but I can put a limit on this if needed anyway!
• Bard: His main attacks come from his ability to wield the bow efficiently, and indeed he's a good shot with his arrows! He can create arrows on the fly with creation magicks, rain arrows down upon his foes quickly and efficiently, and weaves his offensive magic in with his attacks. And as the name implies, there is a musical twist to some of his magic. He can summon his bow and make it disappear for later use at will.
• Offensive Magic: Capable of using fire and ice to dispose of his enemies. His most potent spell, Annihilation, could decimate the area affected by the spell completely- size dependent on how much effort he puts in. He very rarely uses this spell, however, and he absolutely cannot nuke the whole game or anything. Happy to nerf, just not sure what a good guideline would be in terms of how much damage it should or shouldn't do.
• Teleportation: In a cloud of darkness, Hythlodaeus can teleport himself from one place to another. He can take up to one other person with him. He cannot teleport outside Limbo, of course!
• Healing Magic: Hythlodaeus has access to potent healing spells and is capable of reviving an unconscious (but not dead!) ally as well as mending severe wounds.
Inventory: Just his bow, robe and mask.
Eternal Reward: To avert the Final Days completely, and be able to go home to Amaurot and his people.
Goals/Ideas: Hythlodaeus will be very interested in anything to do with the Bureau of Soul Affairs, considering his strongest talent was always his ability to perceive souls! He's very concerned with making new friends, and exploring the new world he's in. He'd want to know what happened to his lifestream, considering he was dead and now he's turbo dead? And he'd want to help his friends become worthy, too.
The ghosts would be a point of interest for Hythlodaeus too. On the moon, once awoken from his long slumber, he bore witness to the ghosts of his brethren losing hope and becoming aggravated. He would want to know more about them, and help them if possible. He could also help others defeat monsters, using his own powers to protect and feel a sense of being useful.
